Why is DMB's Song #41 Called 41?

If you're a fan of passionate songs with exquisite jams, there is a good chance you've heard Dave Matthews Band's song #41. It's a hit song off of their record, Crash, and once you hear Dave strum those beautiful chords, you know you're in for a good time.

There are multiple DMB songs that are just number titles (27 and Seven, just to name a few), but why is #41 named that?

DMB 41

Duh, it's because the jams are so long that the song lasts about 41 minutes live every show!

Okay, that's a joke.

Here is the real answer, and it's quite simple: DMB named the song 41 because it was the 41st song that Dave Matthews ever wrote.

Simple, right? It's actually kind of nice. Yes, it has no significance to the actual song content, but for Dave personally it will always hold that place in time in his memory of where this song came from and where he has progressed since.

Don't believe me? Dave exclaims the answer himself on the very popular Live at Luther College album.

What is DMB's #41 About?

According to Dave himself, "I was thinking about where I come from, and why I wrote songs and what was my inspiration... and how I was now in this situation where those things that I’d done, I so loved, had now suddenly become a source of incredible pain for me. Suddenly there’s all this money and people pulling, asking, ‘Where’s mine?’ The wild dogs come out. The innocence of just wanting to make music was kinda overshadowed by the dark things that come along with money and success...So it’s a song about looking back, but at the same time, a song that’s still adamantly looking forward and going, ‘But I’m still going to carry on, regardless."

It is believed that it is written about parting ways with his old friend, Ross Hoffman.
